It’s driving me crazy but all I can think of is Susan Boyle and that song, “I had a dream . . . .” It amazes me when I think of how many people she must have spoken to, how many turns she must have taken, how many detours she must have been redirected towards to finally achieve the unachievable – She was a contestant on the British version of American Idol. It boils down to the most basic – Susan wanted something so badly, she networked, networked, networked regardless of the obvious working against her. We’ve probably all seen the video so it’s not important what the obstacles were. What is so flabbergasting is that this seemingly naïve, unsophisticated, shy woman, was so brilliant at networking and selling herself to whoever listened - she succeeded!

Networking is a natural action. We do it everyday – we talk to people, collect advice from people, we remember people and we file away the information until one day, it comes to us in an epiphany that you actually have an arsenal – a small army – working in your corner.

I too had a dream. No, not the song, but an actual dream. I wanted to build a much needed baby boomer community. I visualized, I planned, and yes, I even sweet-talked if I thought I could get someone’s attention. I was so proud of my executive summary which I passed out to whoever would allow me to buy them a Starbucks. Everyone was very kind and supportive (why not, I was feeding them) and kept throwing out new ideas, some of which I actually incorporated and directed me to other people to talk to. I wrote another executive summary – talked to more people, incorporated more new ideas, wrote another summary, talked to yet other people and so on and so on until I had something that made my initial vision just a blur of what it is today. Now What?

I now understood what I didn’t understand, I was confident; I knew what I didn’t know which was enormous but I was meeting people and slowly moving forward. Back to networking – back to the beginning –on to Douglas Castle. I connected with Douglas, on the internet around 3 years ago. Perhaps spoke to him 3 or 4 times during that period but never met mano to mano. But I was in my networking mode, third time going through my contact information and I was on the “Cs”. So, I figured – why not? We connected and I gave him my now infamous executive summary and . . . . . just check out my blog at http://srmeetup.blogspot.com/ to see how it’s all coming together. If this is not a perfect demonstration of networking in motion, what is?

Douglas exemplifies the meaning of networking, of working towards a common goal, of mentoring and trusting (not to mention patience, patience and then a bit more patience) He has connected me with so many new contacts I am humbled and grateful. I think he secretly wants to be SrMeetUp’s mascot.

I’m thrilled that I’m making this happen at the ripe young age of - - - - well, let’s just say I am a member of the 60+ Baby Boomer Community. I still network and am so excited by the enthusiasm and support for my Baby Boomer 60+ Community. BEING WHO YOU ARE.

Dear Readers:

Laughter, and a humorous exchange with associates and colleagues makes for deeper bonding, greater communication and a lighter spirit. Never forget that people do not make business decisions logically -- they tend to want to do business with people they like, and whose company they enjoy. Don't try to be funny if you're not -- that is not the point. The point is that showing your human and non-business side might just be the catalyst that (paradoxically) swings a decision in your favor.

Let your personality come through. Be who you are. Differentiate yourself from all of the other "poured out of the mold" persons.

Being you might just prove to be your greatest strength.

No I am not. By the way, your great aunt says "Hello". The afterlife is miserable -- they ran out of harps, so I am carrying around an accordion. Fortunately, a chiropractor met his demise two days ago and will work on me as soon as they are finished processing him (an immigration issue, I think) through Upland Security - They have J.Edgar Hoover heading it up. You have to see him in a dress and hosiery...he sure seems nicer than I would have thought. Did you know that he's an excellent "charades" player, too?

I shall indeed call (despite the long distance charges) so that we may get together. I get a furlough every few weeks (they have a union up here), although there's always some crap involved about my having to save someone's life and do good deeds and so forth. Man, it never ends...

Oh...hey...gotta go. I'm jamming with George Harrison, Benny Goodman and Luther Van Dross in fifteen minutes.

The older you are, the more pictures you will recognize. Anyone over age 65 should remember over 90% of what they see. But it's great at any age.

AN OPEN DOOR TO ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

Dear Friends:

I could quote a litany of reasons why 60+ Baby Boomers should network, most, if not all, based on negative forces currently taking control of our universe. I could recite financial, social, family, health and fitness, employment, retirement, etc. etc, etc. reasons to stay involved. I can regurgitate what you know to be true – “60 is the new 40”, etc. etc. but I am sure you’ve heard it all before. I will not waste my cyber waves with “been there done that” platitudes. We have all lived long enough to see through that. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I will do through SrMeetup.com and through my blog postings (right here!) is to be as up-to-date / true-to-ourselves and, therefore, honest-as-the-day-is-long (depending on the month) yadayadayada to remind us each and every day that we still have or should have wish lists, dreams --- that our lives are filled with endless possibilities. Becoming part of our SrMeetup community is just like your first day of school or the first day at a new job or the day after your wedding or the birth of your first grandchild – a future filled with endless possibilities.

So some of you may say, “Heck, how do you do that?” or perhaps question my capabilities a bit more strongly –expletives are always welcome-- ... Although I am a creative giant having said it first, it is really quite fundamental… you simply talk to people. Years ago we used the word “support” when we referred to our neighbors and friends who helped with the kids while both parents worked - driving to and from every activity made available. Heaven forbid our child would be scarred forever if not included. I was a “soccer mom” before Sara ever coined the phrase. We talked to everyone we knew to try and get a foot in the door for a new position, a new career opportunity, a good doctor, a totally different creative gardener (just how many ways are there to plant a tree?). We sought out referrals for plumbers, caregivers, restaurants, new diets that will keep us looking and feeling like 40 yrs old (which now must be closer to 20). We hunted for a good book to read on vacation or a good vacation place to read a favorite author. We’ve been networking all our lives even when we were not aware.

Today, through SrMeetup, we will make new friends, find new business opportunities or careers, feel valued by helping others benefit by our professional and personal experiences, meet people who laugh at the same jokes, sigh deeply about the simple days of Donna Reed or Leave it to Beaver, boogie to our favorite tunes, compare the good old days of Viet Nam to the Gulf Wars, (sarcasm), inflation, financial successes. We get it – we know what we need to do and we are more than able to do it – we just need to talk to people with similar experiences, goals and challenges. We need to continue doing what we’ve done all our lives – we need to continue to network.

We have always had something to say and we’ve said it - we have always made a difference – good and some less than good differences. We can still make a huge difference – “. . . nobody puts Baby (Boomers) in a corner!” (I paraphrase from Dirty Dancing)

Everyone has encountered great joys, sadness, successes and failures, tragedies and losses - hopes on the rise and not all too subtle declines. We have all lived through a lifetime of similarities.
